Chapter Twelve

When they were done bathing, Ryker reached under him and pulled the drain plug, praying the water wouldn’t bubble back up somewhere else in the house. Fortunately the bathwater swirled down the drain without incident.

“I was thinking at some point you could let me know where I’m going to sleep,” Ryker said as Skylar dried off.

“What about Bolin?” she asked.

“Let’s get him to a comfortable position somewhere, then we’ll zip-tie him to something he can’t get away from.”

“We can just do his arms and legs and let him sleep in the tub,” Skylar said. “It won’t be so bad with enough blankets and a pillow. And there’s nothing sharp in here he can shear the restraints off with.”

“We can tie a length of rope or an extension cord from the bathroom door handle to the staircase,” he said. “That way he won’t be able to open the door from inside even if he does get free.”

Skylar and Ryker rustled up some blankets and a pillow, then got Bolin situated in the tub. When the Chicom guard climbed in and got comfortable, he said, “This is going to be okay.”

“Wrists,” Ryker said. Skylar had the flashlight on Bolin. The Chicom offered up his wrists willingly, like he knew the score. “I’m going to do your ankles, too.”

“If you feel it’s necessary,” he said.

“For now, yes.”

Bolin didn’t resist. Skylar sat a bottle of water on the edge of the tub, shined a light on it and said, “This is in case you get thirsty, but don’t drink too much or you’ll end up pissing yourself and your bed.”

“Okay,” he said. “Thank you, Skylar.”

“For what?” she asked.

“For keeping your word with me,” he said, “and not doing what they would have done.”

“You’re welcome.”

When they shut the door, Ryker tied an orange extension cord around the handle and then affixed it to the staircase’s newel post.

“Where to now?” Ryker asked. She could tell he was tired of wondering where he was going to sleep, but she sort of liked torturing him.

She said, “Follow me.”

Skylar walked them to her old room where there was a queen-sized bed. Everything looked about the same from when she moved out and Kim moved in.

Tomorrow, if they were lucky, she’d head back to hers and Logan’s place, see about Logan, maybe lock down on where Yoav and the boys were. But for tonight, she wanted nothing more than to sleep in a bed with pillows, blankets and everything.

“Where do you want me to sleep?” he asked.

“On the left side.”

Instead of acting surprised that she wanted him in bed with her, he walked over, took off most of his clothes, then got in bed and pulled the blankets to his chin.

“I think I can actually hear you smiling in the darkness,” she said.

“It feels incredible,” he replied. “And yes, I have a huge smile on my face right now.”

She wasn’t sure who fell asleep first, she only knew he was up before she was. She knew this when she opened her eyes, stretched, and realized he was gone.
